Health &Family Welfare Department Odisha has restructured the Odisha Pharmacist Service Cadre. The resolution dated 20 November 2023 has changed nomenclature of pharmacists and now will be called pharmacy officers.
The new pharmacist service cadre Odisha has introduced the new post of chief pharmacy officer at pay scale level 11. The number of posts at seniors’ levels has been increased significantly, this will allow pharmacists working under government to get timely promotion benefits.

Necessary changes in Odisha Pharmacist Service (Methods of Recruitment and Conditions of Service) Rules, 2019 will be made by this Department in due course.
Eligibility criteria
Pharmacy Officer: Entry stage by direct recruitment
Senior Pharmacy Officer Level-II: 8 years as Pharmacy Officer
Senior Pharmacy Officer Level-I: 5 years as Senior Pharmacy Officer Level-II or 15 years in the cadre out of which 2 years as Senior Pharmacy Officer Level-II
Chief Pharmacy Officer: 5 years as Senior Pharmacy Officer Level-I or 20 years in the cadre out of which 2 years as Senior Pharmacy Officer Level-I
Assistant Director, Pharmacy: 5 years as Chief Pharmacy Officer or 25 years’ service out of which 1 year as Chief Pharmacy Officer.
Comment: Increasing the number of posts at each level is commendable step and will help in quicker promotions. However, the pay-scales remain same as earlier. In India the qualification of pharmacists is not upgraded, resulting in professional backwardness in the profession.
