Eligibility And Qualification For Drug Inspector in India 2023

The general eligibility for drug inspector in India is a pharmacy degree (B.Pharm) Or degree in Medicine with specialization in Clinical Pharmacology/ Microbiology.

But how to become drug inspector in different states of India? To answer this question, we do an eligibility check for Drug Inspector Post in central government; and states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh (UP), Madhya Pradesh), Rajasthan, Goa, Kerala etc.

If you satisfy the eligibility conditions, then you can appear for Drug Inspector job exam which consists of two papers. First paper test knowledge of pharmacy subjects and drugs testing, and other paper consists of general awareness and aptitude questions.

UPSC Drug Inspector Eligibility

General Eligibility Condition for drug Inspector in UPSC And many other states are:

  • B. Pharma Or Medicine with specialization in Clinical Pharmacology/ Microbiology.
  •  Additional 18 months experience in manufacturing or testing of Schedule C or C1 drugs is also desirable in UPSC but is not essential. 

You will be safe for applying in most states if you satisfy above general eligibility conditions for DI. If applying for post of drug inspector in states, generally you should also be familiar with the local language and customs.

Now let us see eligibility and qualification requirements in some states. The age limits mentioned below are usually for general category with usual relaxations for reserved categories.

Eligibility For Drug Inspector In Assam

Age: 18 years to 43 years
Academic Qualification:
Candidate must:
(a) Be a Graduate in Medicine or Science of a University recognized for the purpose by the Appointing Authority and have had at least one year post graduate training in laboratory under:
i. A Government analyst appointed under the Drugs Act, 1940 or
ii. A Chemical Examiner or
iii. A Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chemistry of Great Britain Branch (Branch. E.) or
iv. The Head of an Institute specially approved for the purpose by the appointing authority
or
(b) Hold a Degree in Pharmacy or Pharmaceutical Chemistry or post graduate Degree in Chemistry with Pharmaceutical as special Subject recognized for this purpose by the Appointing Authority or the Associate Diploma of the Institution Chemists (India) obtained by passing the examination with “Analysis of Drugs and Pharmaceuticals” as one of the subjects
or
(c) Hold the Pharmaceutical Chemist’s Diploma granted by the pharmaceutical society of Great Britain.
(d) Desirable Qualification – Preference will be given to candidates having uniformly good academic qualification, good health for extensive travelling and experience in handling legal matters related to their job in Govt. of Assam Institutions.

Eligibility For Drug Inspector in Andhra Pradesh, AP

Age: 18 years to 34 years
Educational qualification:
Degree in Pharmacy or Pharmaceutical Science or Medicine with Specialization in Clinical Pharmacology or Microbiology from a University established in India by Law.

Eligibility For Drug Inspector in Bihar

Educational qualification:
A candidate must have held a degree in Pharmacy of Pharmaceutical Sciences or Medicine with specialization in Clinical Pharmacology or Microbiology from a University established in India by law.

Eligibility For Drug Inspector in Goa

Age: Not exceeding 42 years.
Educational & Other Qualifications: –
Essential: (i) Degree in Pharmacy or Pharmaceutical Sciences or Medicines with specialization in Clinical Pharmacology or Microbiology from a University established in India by Law. (ii) Not less than 18 months experience in the manufacture of at least one of the substances specified in schedule C and/or schedule C1 to the Drugs and Cosmetics Rule, 1945
OR
(ii) Not less than 18 months experience in testing atleast one of the substances specified in schedule C and/or schedule C1 to the Drugs and Cosmetics Rule, 1945
OR
(ii) Not less than three years’ experience in the inspection of firms manufacturing any of the substances in schedule C and/or schedule C1 to the Drugs and Cosmetics Rule, 1945, during the tenure of his service as a Drugs Inspector.
(iii) Knowledge of Konkani.
Desirable: Knowledge of Marathi.

Eligibility For Drug Inspector in Gujarat

Education qualification: Degree in pharmacy or Pharmaceutical Sciences or Medicine with Specialization in Clinical Pharmacology or Microbiology.

Eligibility For Drug Inspector In Haryana

Essential Educational qualifications:
a) Second Class bachelor’s degree in pharmacy OR Pharmaceutical Chemistry.
b) One and half years’ experience in manufacturing of at least one of the substances specified in Schedule C appended to the Drugs and Cosmetic Rules 1945.
OR
One and half years’ experience in testing of at least one of the substances specified in the said Schedule C in a laboratory approved for the purpose by the licensing authority.
OR
Three-year experience in inspection of Firms manufacturing any of the substances specified in the said Schedule C
c) Adequate knowledge of Hindi/Sanskrit.
Age:
A Candidate should not be below 21 years and not more than 42 years age.
Age relaxation available for reserved categories of Haryana.  (see in complete notification below)

Eligibility For Drug Inspector In Himachal Pradesh

AGE: Between 18 to 45 years.
Essential Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in pharmacy or Pharmaceutical Chemistry or a post- Graduate Degree in Chemistry with pharmaceutics as essential subject of a University established in India by the Law or its equivalent qualification recognized and notified by the Central Government for such purpose or the Associateship Diploma of the Institution of Chemists (India) obtained by passing the Examination with “Analysis of Drugs and pharmaceuticals” as one of the subjects.
OR
Bachelor’s degree in science or Graduate in Medicine of an University recognized for this purpose by the appointing authority and has had at least one year’s post-graduate training in a laboratory under (i) a Government Analyst appointed under the Act, or (ii) a Chemical Examiner, or (iii) the head of an institution specifically approved for the purpose by the appointing authority,
Provided that only those Inspectors: –
(i) Who have not less than 18 months experience in the manufacture of at least one of the substances specified in Schedule-C OR
(ii) Who have not less than 18 months’ experience in testing of at least one of the substances specified in Schedule–C in a laboratory approved for this purpose, by the licensing authority OR
(iii) Who have gained experience of not less than three years in the inspection of firm manufacturing any of the substances specified in Schedule-C appended to these rules during the tenure of their service as Drugs Inspectors shall be authorized to inspect the manufacture of the substances mentioned in schedule-C.
Desirable Qualification: – Knowledge of customs, manners and dialects of H.P. and suitability for appointment in the peculiar conditions prevailing in the Pradesh.

Eligibility For Drug Inspector in Kerala

Age limit: Age: 21-36 Only
Qualifications:
Degree in Pharmacy of a recognised University
1. Persons appointed as Drugs Inspector shall be on training for Six months from the date of joining in service.
2. Probation with respect to the category of Drugs Inspector who are appointed by Direct Recruitment shall commence after successful completion of training.
3. Every person appointed as Drugs Inspector shall during the period of probation pass Account Test (Lower) or Account Test for Executive Officers if he has not already passed the same.

Eligibility For Drug Inspector in Karnataka

Age Limit: 18-35 for General Category, upto 40 years for reserved categories.
Essential Qualification:

  1. Must be holder of B.Pharma degree in Pharmacy.
  2. Must have put in a service of not less than eighteen months of experience in the manufacturing and or testing of schedule C and / or C1 drugs included in the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945

Candidate must have knowledge of Kannada language. 

Eligibility For Drug Inspector in Maharashtra

AGE: Between 18 to 45 years.
Qualification/ Eligibility Criteria:
Eligible applicants applying for the position of Drug Inspector should have degree in Pharmacy or pharmaceutical chemistry or in medicine with specification in clinical pharmaceutical or micro-biology from a university established in India by Law and experience after acquiring above qualification in the manufacture of testing of drugs or enforcement of the provisions of the act for a minimum period of five years.

Eligibility For Drug Inspector In Madhya Pradesh, MP

Age limit – 18 to 40 years
Education qualification: Degree in pharmacy or Pharmaceutical Sciences or Medicine with Specialization in Clinical Pharmacology or Microbiology

Eligibility For Drug Inspector/ Drug Control Officer in Rajasthan

Age limit – 21 years- 45 years
Educational Qualification:
Candidates must have a degree in Pharmacy/ Pharmaceutical Sciences / Medicine with Specialization in Clinical Pharmacology/ Microbiology from a recognized University established in India by Law as rule 49 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules 1945.Candidate’s knowledge of Hindi language in devnagriscript (lipi).


Eligibility For Drug Inspector In Uttar Pradesh, UP

Age Limit- 21 to 40 years
Essential Qualification-
A candidate for direct recruitment to the post of Drugs Inspector must possess the following qualifications: – (i) Degree in Pharmacy or Pharmaceutical Sciences or Medicine with specialization in Clinical Pharmacology or Microbiology or equivalent from a recognized University.
(ii) (a) Eighteen Month’s Experience in the manufacture of at least one of the substances specified in Schedule ‘C’ to the Drug and Cosmetics Rules, 1945, Or
(b) Eighteen Month’s Experience in testing of at least one of the substances specified in Schedule ‘C’ to the Drug and Cosmetics Rules, 1945, in a laboratory approved for this purpose by the licensing authority, or
(c) Three years’ experience in the inspection of firms manufacturing any of the substances specified in Schedule ‘C’ to the Drug and Cosmetics Rules, 1945 during the tenure of their services as Drug Inspector of any State Government or Central Government.
Preferential Qualification- Other things being equal, such candidates shall be given preferences in the matter of direct recruitment-
(1) Who has served in the territorial army for minimum period of two years. or
(2) Who has obtained a “B” certificate of National cadet corps.

 Many states currently do not require any experience after B. pharma to apply for Drug Inspector post like AP, Bihar, Gujarat, Kerala, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh

  1. I completed B.pharm. And now I taking admission for master. My Que. is that, after completing M.pharm. And having 3years of industrial work experience in testing of c drug., is it ok for appearing drug inspector exam for Maharashtra..?

    1. Dipali maharashtra state require 5 years industry experience in testing. M.pharma years are not counted.

    1. Most companies manufacture drugs or formulations that comes under Schedule C or C1. Injections, Antibiotics and vitamins Formulations are common. You will need to provide experience certificate from the company only once, when you are called for document verification before joining. this stage comes after clearing the exam.
      Your experience certificate should mention that you were involved in manufacturing or testing of schedule C or C1 drugs.

    1. You can apply for drug inspector in states which do not require any experience. Medical store experience is not counted for drug inspector but it is counted for government pharmacist in many departments.

    1. As 2018 karnataka drug inspector notification clearly mention experience , you cannot apply. Be patient and prepare for future drug inspector and pharmacists exams.

    1. yes Abhisekh you can apply for drug inspector exams. But many states require experience in testing or manufacturing of drugs, so first get it too.

    1. As per past notification Gujarat state do not require experience for drug inspector post. Still for future safe you should get the experience till next vacancy is announced.

  6. For Maharashtra you require experience of total 5 years in same field. However you can apply for Gujarat. For Goa and most other states you require experience of 18 months. Pharmagang post all drug inspector vacancies when they are announced.

    1. No, pharmacist get promoted to senior pharmacist, pharmacy officer or chief pharmacist etc. Only in those states where there is a cadre promotion system in place.

    1. In some states maximum age is 40 years. You Will have opportunity if you are from reserved category.

    1. Domicile is required only if you apply on reserved category. general seats are open for all states. For central drug inspector vacancy you do not need any domicile.
